Week 8_ I’m on a roll…

Since I’m still up and writing, might as well keep going.

About 10 years ago, I decided to take the tv out of our bedroom.

Both my husband at the time and I, used to go to sleep lulled by the 10 or 11 o’clock evening news. I used to have nightmares. I used to get so sad by the news and wondering if anything good had actually happened on a given day.

I have since discovered that I am one of those people who feel too much. There’s a human label for it. I don’t care to label myself.

Through the years, I’ve watched less and less tv. Ironic, being an actor!

At this point, I don’t even have a cable subscription. I have netflix. Which I watch occasionally, and mostly when my daughter comes to visit and we watch some show we like together or a movie.

Weeks go by and I haven’t turned the tv on. Not even for my beloved P90X. Oops!

My Mother will call from Mexico City to chastise me for not being “informed” (she doesn’t ask for my opinion about this), and to tell me there’s a storm coming. There usually isn’t. Or the “storm” is a simple rain shower, way lighter than any afternoon summer downpour in Mexico City! She can’t understand it… It’s ok. I know different.

Every time someone mentions a celebrity or some theme that’s been recently in the news and I reply with, “I’m sorry, I don’t know what you’re talking about”, I get THE stare.

If you’ve always watched tv, you have no idea what I’m talking about. If you’ve taken the MKMMA challenge and given it up, at least for a week, I am so happy you’ve joined me!!!

Hopefully, you’ll let it go long enough to get THE stare. I hope you giggle when that happens and you think of me.

That’s when you’ll know there’s no going back!

  1. So happy to read your post Jana. I too stopped watching 99% of TV during the Masterkey last year, and only watch a couple of selected comedy series with my daughter. My older daughter came home to visit a few weeks ago and was quite shocked that I had no idea what was going on in the world! But in my world, the people, circumstances and events I live everyday is great 🙂 Am I burying my head in the sand or filtering out everything I don’t want or need to know about? I feel I am protecting my mind from harm as I learn to control my thoughts and feelings, and am creating the life I want instead of the life I thought I just had to accept. So glad to read someone else experiencing the same.

  2. Love this! I am with you. I have never had a TV in the bedroom – it must be an American thing perhaps, I don’t know – and I too have reduced the TV watching I do, and also news watching too. It is so freeing. There is not much of anything to learn anyway…….I learn much more from great articles or books even. And yes, I agree on the depressing part of this. I have found that doing it and seeing benefits is easier than imagining it…….so many of us – myself included – get so hooked on TV and all things with a screen. But no more. 🙂 Glad to find a few fellow MKMMAer’s who feel the same 🙂

  3. I went 13 years without TV and thoroughly enjoyed the blank stare. It actually gave me a jolt of energy because I was able to talk about more than last nights show. It says in the bible that NOTHING is new under the sun. So often I would mention that when someone wanted to get on me about not knowing the current news
